BUCYRUS - This Saturday, the main drag in uptown Bucyrus will once again be home to lappers. Oh yes, the memories I have lapping uptown with my friends and meeting people at the Foodtown parking (now Kroger for you young ones).
For several years, lapping has stopped on Friday and Saturday nights but one local gal is bringing it back and it all started with a Facebook post.
"Someone posted last winter how we all used to take laps and a bunch of people said that it would be fun to do that again," said Tammy Knickel.
Tammy took it upon herself to set up a meeting with Bucyrus Mayor Jeff Reser.
"He said it was a great idea but we needed a parade permit. So, I applied and the traffic committee approved," Tammy said.
She, along with Brian Mollenkopf, Valerie Smith and Tim Bell, have been working together to create the First Annual 1980s Throwback Cruisin' and Lap Night.
"Our class (Colonel Crawford '86) is meeting at Aumiller Park for a picnic Saturday and I have seen posts for some of the other classes that are planning to meet up also," Tammy said.
Tammy said she loved taking laps uptown when she was in high school. (Like many of us did!)
"My best friend, Tina Kanable, drove a Chevette and it was always loaded with a bunch of us girls. We had so much fun. I miss the friendships that we all had together.... and the Chinese fire drills," Tammy said with a laugh. "We want everyone to be a part of this."
Tammy noted that her mom took laps back in the 50's in Bucyrus and I just want to add that my mom did too, in my dad's convertible while he was off serving in the National Guard on the weekends, lol.
Cars will be hitting Sandusky Avenue to lap by 8 p.m. For more information about the event, visit https://www.facebook.com/events/1761992857444813.
Is this just a one time thing? Or will this happen more than once a year?
