The Bucyrus City School District and Bucyrus Elementary School 21st Century Community Learning Center (CCLC) Afterschool Program will host a “Touch a Truck” event for children during the next downtown First Friday event on Aug. 4.
The event, taking place from 5 to 8 p.m. on the east and west sides of Washington Square, is designed to provide an educational event for families, spotlighted by opportunities for children to explore and touch trucks, heavy construction and farm equipment, emergency response vehicles and other equipment.
“I first heard of the ‘Touch A Truck’ event while attending a 21st CCLC grant workshop in the spring, and thought why not have one for our families in Bucyrus,” said Afterschool Coordinator Robin Showers. “This will be a fun family activity with lots of learning about the trucks and their sponsoring businesses/agencies, and the skills needed to operate the vehicles.”
Showers worked with First Friday Chairperson Sue Logsdon to help make the idea a larger community event. Kathy Laird and Ashtyn Boyd, BES Afterschool Co-Coordinator with Showers, have helped develop the idea further and develop the list of trucks and equipment to be involved in the event.
Businesses and agencies participating in the “Touch A Truck” event with vehicles includes: Bucyrus City Schools (school bus); Bucyrus City Police Department (police cruiser); Bucyrus City Fire Department (ambulance and fire truck); Crawford County Sheriff's Office (Special Response Tactical vehicle); VFW Post 1078 (World War II Jeep); Hord Family Farms (tractor); Dauch Concrete (concrete mixer truck); Ohio Department of Transportation, Crawford County (patriotic plow truck); North Central State College/Crawford Success Center (robotic classroom trailer); Jess Stiger (sprint race car); Hensley Towing (large car carrier), with WQEL/WBCO radio broadcasting from the car trailer.
“I am excited that Mrs. Showers, Ms. Boyd and Mrs. Laird have developed this idea into a community-wide event,” said Bucyrus Superintendent Kevin Kimmel. “This is just one example of many that show our school district understands and appreciates the important role it plays in the Bucyrus community, and we will work to continue bringing these kinds of activities forward for children.”
The Secondary School will have an informational booth during the event. The performing and visual arts, College Credit Plus program, Virtual Learning Academy and college and career readiness will highlight the information being shared. The building’s administrative team, Dr. Burke, Mr. Fourman and Mr. Dennison, will also be available to answer any questions that Secondary School students and their families have about the upcoming school year.
Familes are encouraged to bring their camera for photo opportunities with the vehicles and equipment. Please contact Robin Showers at rshowers@bucyrusschools.org with any questions.
