MARION KOHL’S PROVIDES SUPPORT FOR BUCYRUS ELEMENTARY PROGRAMS

BUCYRUS – The Bucyrus Elementary School and the Bucyrus Elementary Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) are excited to announce that the PTO has received a $500 grant from the Kohl’s Corporation.
The Kohl’s grant program provides nonprofit organizations with fundraising opportunities. Eligible organizations apply for the fundraiser through the Kohl’s Corporation, providing information on the purpose of the fundraiser and how monies will be used to benefit the non-profit organization’s cause.
“The Kohl’s grant will be used to support the BES Leader in Me program and the Afterschool Program,” said Elementary Afterschool Coordinator Robin Showers. “I am thankful for the support Kohl’s has provided, as well as the guidance from the district’s administration and PTO in applying for the grant.”
Kohl’s Associates-In-Action (AIA), as part of the fundraiser for the PTO, participated in the Afterschool Program’s “Touch A Truck” event during First Friday in Bucyrus on Aug. 4. The Kohl’s associates greeted families attending the event, handed out Bucyrus Elementary School information, event maps and a “Touch A Truck” scavenger hunt activity.
“The Kohl’s volunteers did so much to enhance our ‘Touch A Truck’ event,” said Showers. “They distributed school supplies such as book bags, pencils, stickers, folders and journal books to families who attended the event. It truly was an event that benefited our community thanks to the Kohl’s AIA volunteers.”
The Kohl’s grant will support after-school family engagement nights, community Leader in Me luncheons, family movie nights and family literacy nights as well.
“I want to thank Robin Showers for her work in bringing this grant opportunity to our district,” said Superintendent Kevin Kimmel. “I appreciate the financial support, as well as the volunteers’ time, that Kohl’s and their Associates-In-Action team provided for our First Friday event. It’s this kind of support that helps our students reach their maximum potential for success.”

DARE PROGRAM PREPARES BUCYRUS STUDENTS FOR LIFE’S CHALLENGES

BUCYRUS – The Bucyrus City School District, thanks to the support of the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office, has been able to provide the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program to Bucyrus sixth grade students.
The program was revitalized in 2014 when Crawford County Sheriff Scott Kent approached Bucyrus Superintendent Kevin Kimmel with the idea of expanding the Sheriff’s Office’s DARE program into the city school district.
“When we lost our DARE program, we lost a vital piece of the overall educational experience for Bucyrus students,” said Kimmel. “When Sheriff Kent approached me about reintroducing the program at no cost to the school district, I jumped at the chance and found a way to make it happen.”
Crawford County Sheriff Deputy Christopher Martin has been teaching the DARE curriculum to the Bucyrus students the past three years, and building administrators have immediately seen a difference.
“We have noticed a significant decrease in our overall discipline issues,” said Secondary School Associate Principal Jay Dennison. “I strongly believe that this is a direct result of having Deputy Martin in our building teaching the DARE curriculum.”
With such great success, the Bucyrus City School District and the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office have every intention of continuing the strong community partnership to help the young people of the Bucyrus community.
“We want to keep the DARE program in our sixth-grade curriculum,” said Kimmel. “We have had so much success, that we’ve been trying to find new ways to fund the program to introduce it to our students at a much younger age.”
Thanks to the efforts of City of Bucyrus Police Chief David Koepke and the City of Bucyrus administration, that idea could become a reality. The City of Bucyrus has applied for, and been named a finalist in, the $25,000 grant program through the State Farm Neighborhood Assist initiative.
“We are encouraging all of our families, friends, and employees to vote for the Bucyrus Police Department in this grant program,” said Kimmel. “If the City of Bucyrus is able to win this grant, it would provide the necessary funding to bring the Police Department’s DARE program to the Bucyrus Elementary School and continue our partnership at the sixth grade with the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office.”
To support The Bucyrus Police Department’s DARE initiative and vote, go to https://www.neighborhoodassist.com/entry/1996570 to show your support for The Bucyrus Police Department DARE submission. The voting phase is open from August 16 through August 25 and anyone with a valid email address is eligible to vote up to 10 times per day.
