Press Release: BUCYRUS BOARD APPROVES NEW BOYS AND GIRLS BASKETBALL COACHES

BUCYRUS, OH (May 25, 2017) – The Bucyrus City School District Board of Education approved the hiring of new head coaches for the district’s boys and girls basketball programs during their regular meeting May 25.
Justin Mattix was approved as the new boys head basketball coach, while Taylor Whitaker will take the reins as the new girls head basketball coach. Both Mattix and Whitaker served as assistant coaches for their respective Redmen programs during the 2016-2017 winter season.
“We are excited to welcome Justin and Taylor as the new leaders of our boys and girls basketball programs, respectively,” said Superintendent Kevin Kimmel. “They both have a strong vision for the direction of their programs, and I’m excited to see where they take our programs.”
Whitaker, a graduate of Bluffton University, currently teaches seventh-grade math at Bucyrus Middle School. Mattix, who also earned his undergraduate degree from Bluffton University, teaches English at Bucyrus High School.
The board also approved Ashley Stevens as the new cheerleading advisor. Stevens, who works with students one-on-one at Bucyrus Elementary School, was a high school cheerleader and volunteer coach before taking over the Bucyrus program.
Kim Miller-Smith, a representative from the Central Region of the Ohio School Boards Association, presented Board of Education member Dr. Paul Johnson with the 10-year Milestone Service Award.
The Board of Education approved the annual Five-Year Forecast, presented by District Treasurer Ryan Cook, allowing him to file his forecast with the Ohio Department of Education. The board then moved to approve a lengthy list of personnel and business items before adjourning to executive session, with no additional action being taken.

The next regular board of education meeting will begin at 7 p.m. in the Lincoln Administration Center Thursday, June 23.
