Bucyrus Police reports-May 25 and a scam warning!!

Notice the entry at 5:26 p.m. There was a young lady, probably in her late teens or early 20's, who came to my house on Tuesday afternoon while Brayden and I were out on the porch. I had already seen her going door to door and was ready with my response which is always, "I don't have time for this." She became hateful and said that my utility rates are going to go up and that she would be back tomorrow when I have time. I told her not to bother and that if I have a problem with my utility rates, I will call the company myself. I don't know if she was saying she was from First Energy or not but I think she is probably the one referenced in this report. Never give out personal information, even if it sounds legit. Ask for paperwork that you can then check out!

A NEW TRADITION BEGINS FOR BUCYRUS SENIORS

This is a press release from Bucyrus City Schools and how cool is it that the class of 2017 will be the first to participate in this new tradition. The ringing of the bell has long been a tradition for graduates of Bucyrus High School. Very cool!

BUCYRUS, OH (May 23, 2017) – The Bucyrus City School District has made a commitment to embrace its past while at the same time enjoying its present and celebrating its future. The graduating class of 2017 will begin a new tradition for the district when they march outside the Bucyrus Elementary School through a tunnel of students and ring the bell in front of the building May 25.
The district rededicated the newly constructed bell tower with the original bell that was part of the original Union School Oct. 14, 2016. The bell hasn’t rung since the renovations were completed at the Secondary School in 2009.
“This bell serves as a reminder of the past success of our students and staff in Bucyrus,” said Superintendent Kevin Kimmel. “It will be an incredible moment when the bell rings again, signifying the start of a new journey for our seniors.”
Since the rededication ceremony, the district has completed the installation of the first 125 “Redmen Walk” brick pavers. The plaques memorializing John Q. Shunk’s original contribution and the Class of 1969’s tribute to Ned Raybuck have also been placed at the bell tower.
“Randy Fischer and I will be sharing the history of the bell with the seniors,” said Kimmel. “It’s important for them to understand, and appreciate, the past because they are the future leaders of the Bucyrus community.”

“Redmen Walk” pavers are still available for purchase. The next round of pavers will be installed in May 2018. Visit the district’s website, www.bucyrusschools.org, and click on the brick paver on the home page to purchase your “Redmen Walk” paver.

Click It or Ticket

Bucyrus Police Department to participate in Click It or Ticket
To Help Save Lives
(Bucyrus, OH) -.  The Bucyrus Police Department is joining state and local law enforcement agencies and highway safety groups in supporting an aggressive national Click It or Ticket seat belt enforcement campaign from May 22 through June 4.  Police will be ticketing unbelted vehicle occupants around the clock—night and day.

Regular seat belt use is the single most effective way to protect people and reduce fatalities in motor vehicle crashes.  When worn correctly, seat belts have been proven to reduce the risk of fatal injury to front-seat passenger car occupants by 45 percent, and by 60 percent in pickup trucks, SUVs and minivans.

Seat belts are the single most effective piece of safety equipment in a vehicle, yet NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) observational studies show that nearly one out of five Americans still fails to wear a seat belt when driving or riding in a motor vehicle.

Stepped-up law enforcement activities will be conducted during the 2017 Click It or Ticket mobilization period from May 22-June 4.  The mobilization will encourage every driver and passenger to buckle up, especially at night.

BUCYRUS, OH (May 15, 2017) – Freshmen students at Bucyrus High School will be the focus of a new program at the Secondary School May 19. The 9th Grade Career and College Day will be a daylong event featuring Bucyrus alumni, current administrators and state officials.
Careers that will be represented will include public safety, social work, business and healthcare, just to name a few. Speakers during the day’s activities will include Bucyrus City School District Superintendent Kevin Kimmel, Secondary School Principal Dr. Mark Burke, Secondary School Career Coach Robin Showers and a lengthy list of alumni.
“We are trying to help our 9th-grade students develop goals for after high school and make plans to reach their goals over the next three years of their educational journey,” said Dr. Burke. “We are very excited to have so many different careers represented, and a group of successful alumni returning to show our students what is possible.”
Ohio Means Jobs representative Amy Dumbaugh will also be speaking to students during the event. She will share her insights on the importance of students setting themselves up for success in high school and the soft skills required to be successful in college and a career.

Local residents support boy's dream

I was talking to one of my closest friends last Sunday about the fact that I could start a Bucyrus blog and still write about some local things or I could just focus solely on my freelance and book writing. I was leaning more towards not creating this blog and then something happened to change my mind.
Local musician and author Russell Hunter, whom I have had the opportunity to interview and write about in the past, posted a photo of a 10-year-old boy playing the “drums” that he had made from buckets and old symbols. Russell happened to pass by him on the north end of Bucyrus while the boy was playing his very creative drum set and snapped the photo above.
Something amazing happened after Russell posted that photo of who we now know is a kid named Dylan Coppler. People from all over the area began to donate money and local car dealer, Greg Leonhardt of Leonhardt’s Auto Sales announced that he would be willing to collect the donations. Russell posted this recently on Facebook:
“Updating everyone on the donations for Dylan Copplers drum set fundraiser... We have collected an amazing $800 to get him an awesome set of drums and are done taking donations, thanx to the beautiful friends and people of this community.. I know the good in this world gets overshadowed by the darkness that tries to consume us, but together we can conquer anything... I am so proud of how everyone came together and I send much love to everyone that had a part in this... Let's spread music, art and love til there is no more hate and war... (I will post pictures when we give him his drums for everyone to see, it's gonna be supper kool!!) also a big ty to Greg Leonhardt, Sweet Water Music Store and everyone else that helped with making Dylan's dreams come true... #smalltownlove #beautifulsouls #artnotwar #musicnothate #togtherweconquerall #loveispriceless”

Now, this is what living in a small town is all about: people coming together to help one another. I think we all should encourage and support the goals and dreams of our young people so that they can remain focused and happy while pursuing something they are so passionate about. My hat is off to all who donated and to Russell, Greg, and everyone else who worked to make a dream come true for this young man.

This story is what made me decide to start this little blog, Bucyrus Features, so I can still write about positive people, places, and things happening in our little town while pursuing some other writing projects. If you have something you want me to feature on here, just let me know. I will also be posting news briefs that people send me, information about upcoming events, etc. but if you want something on an actual news site or print paper, then you will also need to send it to Crawford County Now or the Telegraph-Forum. I will be posting links to some of their stories or press releases as well.

Warning about a computer virus from the Bucyrus Police Department

This message is from the Bucyrus Police Department:

Public Service Announcement from IT department:
As you may have heard on the news over the weekend, there has been a “Ransomware” outbreak called “WannaCry”.
Ransomware is a malicious program that encrypts your files, making them unusable.
The attacker then demands payment from you for the encryption key needed to unlock your files.

A reminder for your computer and other users on your network, to be very cautious in opening emails with attachments.
These attachments many times are the malicious code that, when opened, can render an entire business network inoperable.
These attacks are also becoming much more sophisticated.  They will send you an email, claiming to be from a coworker
or business associate or friend – but the email is not really from that person, and the attachment is malicious.
Since this threat was spreading over the weekend, it is possible that you may have malicious emails in your inbox now.
Again, please be careful in opening any attachments.
